Dhaka, Bangladesh - April 22, 2025
A high-level delegation from the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY), based in Riyadh, completed a productive four-day humanitarian and social mission to Bangladesh, from April 18 to 21, 2025. The visit was centrally focused on conducting a crucial on-the-ground assessment of the needs of Rohingya refugees and accelerating plans to establish a vital medical camp, intended to deliver essential health and humanitarian services to the displaced population.
The delegation's itinerary across Dhaka, Chittagong, and Cox's Bazar was structured to maximize preparations for the medical intervention. A significant effort was dedicated to coordinating logistical and operational readiness for the proposed medical camp:
Dhaka Consultations: Initial meetings were held with medical officials in Dhaka to exchange views and synchronize preparations for the camp.
Chittagong and Cox's Bazar Assessments: The team traveled to the College of Medicine Hospital in Chittagong to discuss utilizing operating rooms and logistical support, meeting with professors and touring surgical facilities. Subsequently, they visited the Fouad Al-Khatib Hospital in Cox’s Bazar to inspect medical facilities, particularly operating rooms, assessing their capacity to support the future camp’s surgical activities.
Direct Intervention in Refugee Camps
A critical component of the trip involved a visit to the Rohingya refugee camps near the border with Myanmar, where the delegation gained firsthand insight into ongoing services. Field observations included:
Inspecting specialized medical units such as a mobile dental clinic and an ophthalmology health center where cataract surgeries were monitored.
Visiting a field hospital in Camp No. 16 providing 24-hour medical care, and observing circumcision operations for children.
Overseeing the distribution of wheelchairs to physically disabled individuals.
Touring various social and educational centers, including a women's handicraft training center, a childcare center/primary school, and a vocational training center for youth.
Concluding the camp visit with a meeting with dedicated teachers and field staff working on the front lines of the crisis.
Strengthening WAMY’s Local Footprint
Beyond the refugee crisis, the delegation actively engaged with WAMY's established initiatives within Bangladesh:
Office and Center Review: They met with WAMY Bangladesh office management to review ongoing programs and progress. At the WAMY Center in Dhaka, they performed Friday prayers and observed a variety of activities, including a computer training course for female students and outreach to scholarship students.
Future Development: Critical discussions were held with local officials regarding the proposed establishment of the Nadwa Hospital and a secondary school at the center, signifying WAMY's commitment to long-term health and educational infrastructure in the country.
Community Engagement: The delegation met with preachers and volunteers to form new local teams. They also delivered a keynote speech at a seminar titled "The Role of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Serving Hajj and Umrah Performers."
Orphan Welfare: The mission concluded on a social high note, with the delegation attending a mass wedding for orphans in Dhaka, where 60 orphan girls were married, underscoring WAMY's dedication to social welfare and orphan care.
The successful mission affirmed WAMY’s humanitarian principles, moving forward concrete plans for refugee assistance while strengthening its core educational and social programs across Bangladesh. The delegation returned to Riyadh having completed a demanding schedule of high-impact field activities.
